The deputy US envoy to the United Nations, Jennifer Locetta, told the Security Council that the ceasefire in Gaza cannot proceed until the body of the final remaining Israeli captive is returned, echoing Israeli officials’ stance that the second phase of the ceasefire depends on the return of all captives’ bodies.

Hamas has stated that recovering the remains of Israeli police officer Ran Gvili is extremely challenging due to the extensive destruction caused by Israeli airstrikes, while critics argue Israel may be using this as a reason to delay the next phase of the deal.

Locetta claimed that the world knows Hamas and its affiliates were aware of every hostage’s location and referenced former President Trump’s plan stipulating that all hostages must be returned as part of ending the Gaza conflict. She stressed that Ran’s body must be returned to his family. Until that happens, Locetta said, the ceasefire process cannot move forward.
