Donald Trump warned that the United States would respond forcefully after three Americans were killed in what officials described as a suspected Islamic State attack in Syria.

The US military’s Central Command said that two service members and one civilian were killed, with three others wounded, when a lone IS gunman ambushed them on Saturday. The incident marked the first fatal attack on US troops in Syria since the fall of President Bashar Assad a year ago.

iSpeaking to reporters at the White House before departing for the Army–Navy football game in Baltimore, Mr Trump said it was “an ISIS attack” and offered condolences to the victims. He added that the wounded appeared to be recovering well and later wrote on his Truth Social platform that there would be “very serious retaliation.” Syrian state media reported that the shooting occurred near the ancient city of Palmyra and that the injured were airlifted to the al Tanf garrison near the borders with Iraq and Jordan.
