A leaked, longer version of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy published last week allegedly identifies Poland as one of four countries the US should try to pull away from the European Union. It also urges Washington to back parties and movements that promote national sovereignty and traditional European cultural norms.
News of the document surfaced as senior security aides to Poland’s right-wing President Karol Nawrocki visited Washington for talks on the new American strategy. The official 33-page version released last week drew attention for warning that Europe faces “civilisational erasure” and may not remain a reliable ally.
It further accused the EU of undermining sovereignty and fueling strife through its migration policies. Defense One reported on Tuesday that the fuller, unpublished version named Poland, Austria, Italy and Hungary as targets for closer US engagement aimed at distancing them from the EU.
The document also encouraged support for pro-sovereignty movements that remain aligned with the United States. These ideas reflect Trump’s warm relations with national-conservative leaders like Hungary’s Viktor Orbán and Poland’s Nawrocki, even as most Poles continue to support EU membership despite a small but growing minority favouring “Polexit.”
