Storm Byron has brought flash floods, strong winds, and hail across Palestine, including war-torn Gaza, until Friday evening, according to the Palestinian Meteorological Department.
Officials have warned that hundreds of thousands of displaced people are at risk because their shelters are weak and overcrowded. The mayor of Gaza City reports that several roads have been cut off and tent shelters have flooded, with some completely submerged.
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, has condemned global inaction as Palestinians in Gaza brace for the winter storm. She wrote on social media that she keeps asking how people have become “such monsters,” unable to stop the unfolding nightmare.
Albanese expressed that this failure harms both Palestinians and the wider world, including those in whose name she says the violence is being committed. She has been an outspoken critic throughout Israel’s two-year war on Gaza. Albanese continues to demand accountability for alleged Israeli war crimes and greater international intervention.
