After meeting Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz in London on Monday, Keir Starmer called other European allies to brief them. The leaders agreed that Europe must continue to stand firmly with Ukraine and intensify economic pressure on Vladimir Putin.
They instructed national security advisers from the UK, France, Germany, and Ukraine to keep discussions going over. In a carefully-worded statement, a Downing Street spokesperson said that they were agreed on the importance of the US-led peace talks for Europe’s security and supported the progress reportedly made so far.
They also reaffirmed the need for a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine, backed by strong security guarantees. The leaders also agreed that while diplomatic efforts continue, Europe must strengthen Ukraine’s ability to defend itself from relentless attacks. They also noted positive steps toward using immobilised Russian sovereign assets to support Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Zelenskyy later described the day’s talks as productive, saying they made small progress toward peace and that a 20-point Ukraine-Europe peace plan should be ready to share with the US as soon as Tuesday evening.
