On Saturday, President Isaac Herzog welcomed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to his Jerusalem residence during Merz’s first visit to Israel since taking office. Herzog highlighted their close friendship and expressed pride in seeing Israel’s Arrow 3 missiles deployed in Germany for European defence. He said that Germany has an important role in shaping a new future for Israelis, Palestinians, and the broader region.
Herzog took the opportunity of referring to a so-called threat posed by Iran, describing it as an “empire of evil” and claimed that Israel’s efforts are intended to defend Europe.
Merz responded that the meeting comes at a time of significant challenge and reaffirmed Germany’s steadfast support for Israel after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack. He stressed that the two nations have strengthened their friendship since then, calling it a “miracle” given the history following the Holocaust.
Merz expressed deep appreciation for the continued diplomatic and personal ties between the countries. He concluded by voicing hope that the war against Hamas will end once the group disarms and that a two-state solution will eventually ensure peaceful coexistence for Israelis, Palestinians, and the wider Arab world.
