Torrential monsoon rains, intensified by tropical storms, have caused deadly floods and landslides across southern Asia, killing roughly 600 people and affecting millions in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.
Indonesia’s Sumatra island was hit especially hard, with entire homes swept away and residents describing the water rising within seconds. Hundreds remain missing across the region, and officials warn the death toll is expected to climb as rescue efforts continue.
Thailand has reported around 160 deaths, while Malaysia has seen several fatalities amid widespread flooding. Sri Lanka, struck by Cyclone Ditwah, has recorded more than 130 deaths and around 170 missing. Rescue operations remain difficult due to ongoing severe weather, leaving thousands stranded and awaiting assistance.
