An Israeli air strike on Sunday killed senior Hezbollah military leader Haytham Ali Tabatabai in Beirut, according to multiple media outlets.
It was the first strike of its kind without prior warning since the 2024 ceasefire. The attack hit an apartment building in the crowded Haret Hreik district of the Dahiyeh suburbs. Lebanese officials reported five deaths and 28 injuries from the strike.
Israeli officials accused Tabatabai of overseeing the group’s buildup and rearmament. Hezbollah confirmed that a top military figure was targeted but did not publicly identify him.
The strike prompted Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to call on the international community to act against ongoing Israeli attacks, following a ceasefire agreement that ended a devastating 2024 conflict in which several top Hezbollah leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah, were killed.
